One on One Interviews

One on one interviews are pretty common when searching for a new opportunity.  They are usually conducted by a hiring manager, or the person you directly will report to within the organization.  The interview attempts to see how well you meet the requirements for the position and if you will fit well into the corporate culture.  This is where researching the company before hand comes into the picture.  Being prepared to answer and ask questions about the company will give you an edge amongst the competition and boost your confidence while interviewing.  It also indicates to the interviewer you are serious about the opportunity, in addition to giving you a chance to ask any questions you had while researching the company.

It is essential to understand that one on one interviews usually happen as a series of interviews with a company.  You will need to make sure you reiterate all of your skills to each person who you interview with at the company.  If you are interviewed by multiple people, be sure to highlight your skills that are necessary for the position to each interviewer.  You need to solidify in their minds that you possess the talent they are seeking!

Making a good impression on your one on one interview is essential for landing the job.  Select your attire the night before, make sure it is pressed and wrinkle-free.  It’s important to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the position you are applying for, be sure to understand the company dress code before interviewing for the position.  And if you are unsure about wearing something, it’s better to err on the side of conservatism in this case.

Body language is very important when interviewing.  Through body language, interviewers are able to tell when you are confident and when you are unsure of an answer.  When in the one on one interview, make sure you are sitting up straight, smiling and try to relax.  Understand that they want you to be comfortable too, so you can give your true perspective on the position.  Remember, you should also evaluate whether or not this company will be a place that will make you happy too.
